Abstract

All hydrothermal ore deposits were formed in one type of geothermal system or another. The modern classification of hydrothermal ore deposits is based on geologic and tectonic environment; nevertheless, it is useful to describe specific deposits as either low-, moderate-, or high-temperature deposits. Genetic models, for all of the important hydrothermal ore deposit-types have been developed and most include a geothermal system of one type or another. The higher temperature systems involve the expulsion of magmatic water, while moderate temperature and low temperature systems are characterized by circulation and lateral flow, respectively. Active ore-formation is observed, uneguivocally, only in modern, active submarine and continental hot spring systems.
