Abstract

This paper reviews the key events that led to the development of large-scale hydropower schemes in Scotland during the period 1900–1970. In particular, it focuses on the careers of some of the panel engineers responsible for certifying over 110 dams that fell within the ambit of the Reservoirs (Safety Provisions) Act 1930 – the forerunner of the reservoirs legislation currently in force.
