Hydrophobic interaction chromatography of aliphatic alcohols and carboxylic acids on octyl-sepharose CL-4B: mechanism and thermodynamics

Abstract

The retenion of homologous aliphatic alchohols and carboxylic acids in dilute phosphate buffer solution was measured on octyl-Sepharose CL-4B and on unsubstituted Sepharose CL-4B as a function f chaing lenghts, pH and temperature. From the retention data the standard thermodynamic function (Δ°, ΔP C p , Δ H°, Δ S°) of the interactio were calculated. The thermodynamics and mechanism of the retention process are discussed.
