Abstract

The influence of electrolytes on the mechanism of cationic dyeing of acrylic fabric has been investigated in terms of ionic and hydrophobic interactions. The effect of salt on hydrophobic interaction is reviewed and used to explain the "unusual increase of dye sorption which occurs at salt concentrations up to 0.5 mol/l," described by Alberghina and co-workers. Thermodynamic analysis suggests that the ionic distri bution coefficient of the dye ( KD ) is a function of chemical potential changes due to hydrophobic interactions. Therefore, KD depends on the type and concentration of electrolyte in the dyebath.
