Abstract

Dodecyl trimethyl ammonium bromides (DTAB) was used to adsorb on the isomorphous substitutions of montmorillonite (MMT) for masking hydrophilic sites. The adsorbed DTAB tails together with siloxane sites of MMT surfaces would greatly increase hydrophobicity of MMT, leading to stronger hydrophobic agglomeration of MMT fines in water. The experimental results showed that DTAB was adsorbed on the isomorphous substitution sites of MMT due to electrostatic interaction, and thus rendered MMT surfaces more hydrophobic. The aggregation of MMT fines in water was greatly enhanced by the addition of DTAB because of the formation of hydrophobic agglomeration at an appropriate shear field.
