Abstract

Hydrogels are materials with extensive biomedical and technical applications. In this work, the swelling and deswelling of poly(methacrylic acid) loosely crosslinked with a dimethacrylate compound were studied. The swelling took place in water at 20°C and was followed by weighing. Specimens after alkaline treatment were also used. The results indicate that swelling is greater in the loosely crosslinked networks as well as being favoured by the alkaline treatment and the use of deionized water.
