Abstract

The USSR State Committee for Hydrometeorology is responsible for operating USSR environmental satellites and also for providing satellite data and services to various users. This presentation is concerned with current and planned capabilities of meteorological, oceanographic and earth-resources satellite systems known as “METEOR”, “OKEAN”, “RESURS” series of satellites. The use of different satellite systems is stipulated by requirements for data coverage, spatial resolution, frequency of data acquisition in various branches of the national economy. Along with other nations and organizations operating their own environmental satellites, the USSR is also contributing to the WMO qlobal observing system, providing satellite data and products to the international user community.
