Abstract
Results of the analysis of a class of periodic magnetic fields which have the property that the flux tube volume can decrease in the θ = 0 plane and increase in the θ = ½π plane. By symmetrizing the system with connecting regions between semistable units, closed surfaces of flux tube volume with negative gradient are obtained. Quadrupole and quadrupole-octupole stabilization is considered. Realizable current configurations are proposed for stabilizing a periodic mirror system.
