Abstract

We have studied here the dynamic stability of a composite hydromagnetic plasma to include simultaneously the effects of neutral-gas friction, Hall currents and viscosity. The prevailing magnetic field is assumed to be uniform and vertical. It is first shown that the solution is characterized by a variational principle. An explicit solution has then been obtained for a semi-infinite composite plasma in which the density has a one-dimensional gradient along the vertical. It is found that the system is unstable for all wave numbers.
