Abstract

Water entering crankcases or gearboxes is frequently a source of premature deterioration of the service properties of the oil. Water contamination of oil results in the formation of stable emulsions with viscosities considerably lower than that of the oil, leading to changes in the liquid friction regime, loss of homogeneity of the lubricant, and poorer lubricity [I]. It was shown in [2] that water deactivates antiwear, antiscoring, and antifoam additives, and lowers the efficiency of oxidation inhibitors.
