Abstract

The activity of alkaline phosphatase, acid phosphatase, nonspecific esterase and adenosine triphosphatase was studied in fully developed, functional rat molar pulps using a method of demineralization that conserves substantial enzyme activity. Alkaline phosphatase activity was greatest in the sub-odontoblastic cell-rich zone about the lateral and occlusal walls of the pulp chamber while acid phosphatase activity was greatest in odontoblasts. Nonspecific esterase was moderately active in odontoblasts and less in the sub-odontoblastic zone. Adenosine triphosphatase activity was principally limited to blood vessels, especially endothelial cells.
