Abstract
2-(Tetrahydro-α-furyl)-5,5-dimethyltetrahydrofuran-4-one under the action of catalytic quantities of concentrated hydrochloric acid readily undergoes hydrolytic cleavage into 2-(3′-hydroxypropynyl)-5, 5-dimethyldihydrofuran-4-one. The isomeric ketone 2-(tetrahydro-α-furyl)-5, 5-dimethyltetrahydrofuran-3-one does not change under these conditions.
