Abstract

Total microbial activity (assayed by the hydrolysis of fluorescein diacetate) in an organic mulch used for avocados in Western Australia changed with time. Temperature, pH and moisture contents of the mulch and the numbers of fungi in the mulch infested with Phylophthora cinnamomi were positively correlated with total microbial activity. The infectivity of P. cinnamomi was negatively correlated with the total microbial activity of the mulch in which it was exposed for 3 weeks.
