Abstract

The stability and the hydrolysis and condensation kinetics of bis(triethoxysilyl)ethane in the water-ethanol solution were investigated using FTIR spectroscopy with a transmission type cell having a very short pathlength. The pH dependence of bis(triethoxysilyl)ethane's overall stability was measured and evaluated, and a new approach was designed to calculate hydrolysis rate constants from the experimental results. Furthermore, equations involving both hydrolysis and condensation processes were solved and the calculated results were compared with experimental data.
