Abstract

Wave Glider is one type of unmanned surface vehicles featuring long duration and large scale cruising capability by translating wave energy to forward motion and generating electricity from solar panels. This paper proposes a new developed wave glider named “Black Pearl”, which equipped wave sensor, conductivity and temperature sensor and micro weather station. Firstly, we present its architectures and discuss the difference between the “Black Pearl” and the Wave Glider made in Liquid Robotics Ltd.; secondly, we propose the field trial plan and analyze the hydrological and meteorological data during the process of the sea experiment, in addition, we carry out a contrast trial to analyze the wave data measured by the “Black Pearl” and the data measured by wave-measuring buoy; thirdly, we talk about the vehicle’s performance in a variety of ocean conditions. The sea trial data is beneficial to the environmental monitoring of the sea area, and provides reference for optimization of the structural design of “Black Pearl”.
