Several donors with different numbers and reactivities of donorable hydrogens were examined in the hydrogen-transferring liquefaction of an Australian brown coal. The reactivities of donors, as well as the solvent/coal ratio, are very important for the yields of oil and asphaltene. The design of a donor solvent is proposed
