Abstract

Hydrogen phosphide or phosphine ( PH3), a colorless, toxic, inflammable gas with an odor like carbide, has been used for the fumigation of insect pests of stored grain for many years. The development of a tablet, and more recently a pellet, composed of aluminum phosphide and ammonium carbamate (Phostoxin®1) which decomposes upon exposure to the atmosphere and slowly liberates the gas, has practically eliminated the danger of spontaneous combustion.
