Grasberger, William Abstract The equation of transfer of specific intensity for a gaseous mixture under the condition of near thermodynamic equilibrium has been derived by L. G. Henyey. On the basis of this equation the deviation of the surface flux from that given by the assumption of local thermodynamic equilibrium within and just outside the lines Ha, Hp, and Pa is computed for normal main-sequence stars with surface temperatures ranging from 70000 to 115000. It is found that the deviation is largest at the exact center of these lines. Here the flux is lower by per cent, with 90 per cent of this deviation due to the influence of the lines Ha, Hp, and Pa alone. Outside the isothermal core of these lines, the influence of lines is negligible, and the deviation (due to the bound-free continua) is only l per cent.
