Abstract

A tantalum monocarbide filament heated above 600 K acts as a catalyst for the equilibration of a mixture of hydrogen and deuterium. The efficiency of exchange rose to about 3 % at a filament temperature of 1000 K and was then constant up to 1400 K. The shape of the equilibration curve suggests that the reaction took place by the Bonhoeffer-Farkas mechanism.
