Abstract

The proposed research program is aimed at developing an in-situ H/sub 2/ probe and providing experimental data of equilibrium distribution and rate of transfer of hydrogen in coal hydrogenation systems. The study is a continuation of an on-going research project to achieve the following specific goals: (1) To develop a thin nickel-membrane probe for in-situ hydrogen measurement; (2) To obtain equilibrium solubility data for hydrogen in coal liquids; (3) To study dynamic behavior and rate of hydrogen transfer in coal liquids and to examine the rate limiting steps of the process; (4) To study the physical/chemical effect due to the addition of coal on the equilibrium distribution of hydrogen in coal liquids; (5) To determine the rate of transfer of hydrogen between the gas phase and the condensed phase (which contains coal liquids and dissolved coal).
