Abstract

In this study, the composite material with composition of MgH2-5 at% Ti-Mn-Cr has been prepared by co-milling of MgH2 powder with Ti-Mn-Cr alloy produced by melt spinning method. The effect of additive on MgH2 structure, i.e. crystallite size, lattice strain, particle size and specific surface area, and also hydrogen desorption properties of obtained composite was evaluated by thermal analyzer method and compared with pure un-milled MgH2. It has been shown that the addition of Ti-based alloy to magnesium hydride can yield a finer particle size after mechanical alloying. As a consequence, the desorption temperature of mechanically activated MgH2 for 15h has decreased from 421°C to 345°C. Further improvement in the hydrogen desorption of composite can be related to more homogeneous distribution of the alloyed elements.
