Abstract

Abstract Proton magnetic resonance (PMR) studies are reported of hydrogen bonding between the OH proton of o-phenylphenol (OPP) and the nitrogen electron donor of quinoline (Qu). Data are also reported on the hydrogen bonding of a coal-derived asphaltene and its acid and base components with OPP. Determination was made of the equilibrium constants of the 1:1 complex between OPP and Qu at 39, 32, 1, and −18°C from the PMR studies. Qualitative results are reported for the interaction between the base fraction of asphaltene and OPP at 32, 1, and −26°C.
