Abstract

Electrons and hydrogen atoms are trapped in comparable yields when frozen solutions of 7 M NaClO 4 containing 0.25 M H + are exposed to X rays. From scavenging experiments in this matrix we conclude that the main fraction of the trapped hydrogen atoms have mobile and scavengable hydrogen atoms as their precursors. These mobile hydrogen atoms are probably formed when electrons react with H + ions. However, a certain fractions (≈ 30–40%) of the trapped hydrogen atoms do not have electrons as their precursors. This fraction corresponds to a yield of about 0.2–0.3 and probably arises from the decomposition of excited water molecules.
