Abstract

Solid oxide fuel cell (SOFC) operation in three modes is described: Power generation (SOFC), conventional electrolysis (SOEC), and fuel-assisted electrolysis (SOFEC). In the SOFEC mode, part of the applied voltage is replaced by chemical potential difference as the driving force. Steam is supplied at the oxygen supplying electrode. A combined 1 kW scale power generation - hydrogen production unit has been demonstrated.
