Abstract

1. The phase compositions of platinum, palladium, and rhodium borides were investigated. A comparison of the x-ray diffraction patterns of the “borides” with the patterns of pure platinum, palladium, and rhodium blacks demonstrated the identical character of their structures and crystal lattice parameters. 2. The adsorptive capacity with respect to hydrogen and the specific areas of the borides differ only slightly from the corresponding values for Pt, Pd, and Rh blacks. 3. The heats of adsorption and the metal-hydrogen bond energies for various degrees of surface coverage were calculated on the basis of the “charge curve” data. The heats of adsorption decrease as the degree of surface coverage with hydrogen increases.
