Abstract

The effect of variation in the mercuric chloride concentration on the lifetime of catalysts for the hydrochlorination of acetylene is discussed. The mercuric chloride concentration is found to significantly affect the initial catalyst activity and the subsequent rate of reduction in conversion observed. In addition, the ratio of acetylene to hydrogen chloride is found to affect the rate of reduction in conversion. Both laboratory and plant scale data are discussed.
