Abstract

Hydrocarbons account for approximately 12 and 10% of the extracted lipi of Onymacris plana (OP) and O. rugatipennis (OR) respectively. The hydrocarbons of the two species were analysed by gas chromatography (GC) and by combined gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS) and comprise: n- alkanes (C 23–C 33; OP, 50%; OR, 26%), 3-methylalkanes (C 24–C 32; OP, 19%; OR, 20%), internally branched monomethylalkanes (OP, C 25–C 34, 18%; OR, C 28–C 34, 40%) and dimethylalkanes (OP, C 27–C 35, 13%; OR, C 29–C 37, 14%). The hydrocarbon mixtures of congenereic species, such as O. plana and O. rugatipennis, are qualitatively very similar, though the components occur in different proportions. Hydrocarbon composition can be used to seperate O. plana and O. regatipennis, subfamily Tentyriinae, from nine species belonging to subfamily Tenebrioninae.
