Abstract

The brominated polyethylene whose the synthesis and the properties were described in part I (this journal) has been used as an intermediate for the synthesis of a new polymeric hindered amine stabilizer. Nucleophilic substitution of bromine atoms was performed with 4- amino,2,2,6,6-tetramethylpiperidine and results in a partial grafting of tetramethylpiperidine group in the polymer chain (≈42%) together with the formation of unsaturated group (≈5%). This new additive is reasonably stable itself and present good stabilizing properties in the photo- and the thermo-oxidation of elastomers like EPDM and polyoctenamer.
