Abstract

An experiment was conducted which unequivocally shows that the black residue formed by reaction of Th with HCl, contains hydridic hydrogen. The black residue, formed from Th and DCl-D/sub 2/O, was washed repeatedly with HClH/sub 2/ O and then decomposed in HCl with catalytic.fluorosilicic acid; the resulting hydrogen gas contained 87% HD, 12% H/sub 2/, and 1% D/sub 2/. It is concluded that the residue is a compound of Th(IV), perhaps ThO(X)H, where X is largely hydroxyl but may also be chloride. The yellowing of the black residue by a variety of agents is discussed. The corresponding U residue is discussed briefly. (D.L.C.)
