Abstract
Knowledge of hydraulic and electro-osmotic permeability coefficients is required to assess the amount and time rate of consolidation by electro-osmosis. Usually, the coefficients are determined separately. In one method, the pore water is allowed to rise in a vertical tube at the open cathode under a constant voltage gradient. The final electro-osmotic equilibrium head at the cathode is used to estimate the electro-osmotic equilibrium head at the cathode is used to estimate the electro-osmotic permeability, k e , from a knowledge of the hydraulic permeability coefficient, k h .
