Abstract

Hydration of ternary OPC–FA–SF cements has been studied using number of techniques. Heat of hydration studies were made with the help of TAM AIR calorimeter, and it was found that fly ash retarded the hydration of OPC and reduced the total heat evolution. However, fly ash and silica fume together improved the heat evolution, but the values were lower than that of OPC. Differential scanning calorimetric studies of cements hydrated for 28 days were made, and it was found that Ca(OH)2 produced during the hydration of OPC reacted with fly ash and silica fume. SEM pictures of hydrated cements were recorded. The results have shown that silica fume accelerates the hydration and minimizes the deficiencies of fly ash blended cement. Mechanism of hydration has been proposed.
