Abstract

1. A comparison has been made between the activities of iron catalysts prepared in different ways in a model reaction of the hydrogenation of C4, and C5 aldehydes and ketones in order to find the hydrogenating capability of these catalysts. 2. In the presence of iron catalysts promoted with Cu, Pd, and Ni the carbonyl group is hydrogenated only at elevated pressure and temperature. In their selectivity, the iron catalysts are considerably inferior to the catalyst Ni-MgO and Cu-Cr2O3-MgO, and so are not to be recommended for preparational purposes. 3. Some ideas are advanced based on multiplet theory to explain why the activity ofα-Fe is less than that of Ni and Cu.
