Abstract

AbstractHydration numbers of sodium, potassium and ammonium sulfonate resins of variously cross‐linked divinyl‐benzene‐styrenc copolymers were determined on the basis of a series of isopiestic experiments with waterethanol mixtures. The hydration number of the resinate, H̄, at any solvent composition of the mixture is given by the following equation: equation image The values of H̄' in each resin system were calculated and were plotted against the concentration of ethanol in the resin phase in order to extrapolate to zero ethanol concentration. The values obtained by extrapolation give the hydration numbers of the resinates which are equilibrated with saturated water vapor, thus equation image The following results were obtained for the resinates of sodium, potassium and ammonium salts, respectively: 0.5% DVB, 23, 12.6, 9.6:4% DVB, 8.4, 5.7, 5.5:8% DVB, 4.1, 2.7, 2.4:16% DVB, 3.0, 2.0, 0.6:24% DVB, 2.0, 0.6, 0.3.
