Abstract

A new hybridised process for singlemode optical fibres has been developed. The process consists of overcladding a VAD-derived core rod with a tubular porous body made from commercial silica powder using a compression forming technique. Optical fibres consisting of 95% powder-derived and 5% VAD-derived silica are fabricated with losses of 0.392 dB/km at 1.3 µm and 0.275 dB/km at 1.55 µm.
