Abstract

The wavelength sharing ability is a key problem of existing hybrid Wavelength/Time Division Multiplexing (WDM/TDM) based Passive Optical Networks (PON). Aimed to enhance the wavelength sharing ability, this article presents a new hybrid WDM/TDM PON enabled by Tunable Wavelength Converter (TWC) based switch. By making full use of newly advantages of tunable wavelength converter technologies, a switch node is designed and introduced into the proposed hybrid WDM/TDM PON, together with two types of dual-stage dynamic bandwidth allocation (DS-DBA) approach, including DS-DBA1 and DS-DBA2 especially for this proposed PON system. Thus, resources allocation in domains of both wavelength and time are realized in this system. Analytical and simulation results show the feasibility and good wavelength sharing ability.
