Abstract

This paper presents a hybrid technique for testing IEC 61850 based IEDs of distance protection. The technique depends on faults simulation on MATLAB using M-files created by the author to achieve the system responses of voltages, currents, power, and all electrical phasors at relay location. Then, these phasors will be converted to COMTRADE file format to be injected to real digital distance protection IED at site via a non-conventional secondary injection test set. But, the analogue signals of the electrical parameter that collected at site via the Merging Units (MUs) will be converted to digital via the integrated IEC61850 software at the test set. The technique is tested on a typical 220/66/11kV substation configuration in Egypt with ten bays to show the validity and effectiveness of the proposed hybrid technique. The R/X characteristics of the distance protection IED is tested through creating a RIO file at KRT software according to the setting inserted to EnerVista URsetup software of the protection IED. Then all protection relay responses will be reverted back from the IED to the test set through the Generic Object Oriented Substation Events (GOOSE) and Sample Values (SVs). Practical testing results are presented to validate the testing technique.
