Abstract

We have developed hybrid integration technology using silica-based planar lightwave circuits (PLCs). PLCs have already provided versatile optical circuit functions with very low loss and long-term reliability. Of these PLCs, the arrayed-waveguide grating (AWG) multi/demultiplexer is the key passive component in WDM systems. Therefore, the hybrid integration of an AWG and semiconductor optoelectronic devices such as laser-diodes (LDs) and photo-diodes (PDs) allows us to obtain more compact multiwavelength optical components with wavelength multi/demultiplexing functions. In this paper, we describe PLC hybrid integration technology for fabricating multiwavelength optical components. We mainly review high-speed multiwavelength photoreceivers with low crosstalk that consist of PDs and an AWG.
