Abstract

WARR (from German for: Scientific Work Group for Rocketry and Space Flight) was founded in 1962 by students with the goal of making up for the lack of a space department at TU Munich. The express goal of the group has always been to not only discuss theory, but to build and test hardware. While graduate students have been important at WARR, the bulk of the work is done by closely knit groups of undergraduates. Over many generations, young students had the opportunity to hone their practical skills, to recognize their leadership potential, and to network with former members, who are now aerospace professionals. Only by an intense outreach program, was it possible to continue engine developments spanning many generations of students. Recent hybrid rocket motors use HTPB as fuel, and nitrous oxide as oxidizer. The next motor is set to use liquid oxygen as oxidizer.
