Abstract

The major challenges of energy storage system (ESS) in power applications are its capability to deliver power to load for a longer time. Some might experiencing fully discharged condition while still in the state of delivering power to the load, which will cause the system to be interrupted and loss the energy supply. The best way to cater on this problem is through hybridization of ESS, where two or more storage system work together to give better performance and ensure longer discharge life cycle compared to a single storage. This paper presents the performance optimization of a single and hybrid battery storage system. Both systems were modelled and simulated in MATLAB/Simulink while the performance was measured in terms of the state of charge (SOC) of the battery, voltage and current delivered to the load. Overall result exhibited the advantages of utilising hybrid battery energy storage and also revealed that the improvement in extending the battery life cycle performance. Both simulation results are discussed and presented.
