Abstract
<p class="Toverskrift3" style="margin: 6pt 0cm;"><span class="hps"><span style="mso-ansi-language: EN-US;" lang="EN-US"><strong><span style="font-size: large;"><span style="font-family: Times New Roman;">Abstract</span></span></strong></span></span></p><p class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0cm 0cm 0pt;"><span style="font-size: small;"><span style="font-family: Times New Roman;"><span class="hps"><em style="mso-bidi-font-style: normal;"><span style="mso-ansi-language: EN-US;" lang="EN-US">This article</span></em></span><em style="mso-bidi-font-style: normal;"><span style="mso-ansi-language: EN-US;" lang="EN-US"> <span class="hps">is based</span> <span class="hps">on a qualitative</span> <span class="hps">study with interviews</span> <span class="hps">of ten</span> <span class="hps">elderly people with</span> <span class="hps">ethnic</span> <span class="hps">minority</span> <span class="hps">backgrounds.</span> <span class="hps">The purpose</span> <span class="hps">is to</span> <span class="hps">present what the elderly think and wish for their old age</span> <span class="hps">in Norway.</span></span></em></span></span></p><p class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0cm 0cm 0pt;"><span class="hps"><em style="mso-bidi-font-style: normal;"><span style="mso-ansi-language: EN-US;" lang="EN-US"><span style="font-family: Times New Roman; font-size: small;">&nbsp;</span></span></em></span></p><p class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0cm 0cm 0pt;"><span style="font-size: small;"><span style="font-family: Times New Roman;"><span class="hps"><em style="mso-bidi-font-style: normal;"><span style="mso-ansi-language: EN-US;" lang="EN-US">Our study</span></em></span><em style="mso-bidi-font-style: normal;"><span style="mso-ansi-language: EN-US;" lang="EN-US"> <span class="hps">shows that</span> <span class="hps">the informants'</span> <span class="hps">wishes for</span> <span class="hps">an old age</span> <span class="hps">in Norway</span> <span class="hps">are largely</span> <span class="hps">related to contact</span> <span class="hps">with their</span> <span class="hps">family and others</span> <span class="hps">from the same cultural</span> <span class="hps">background as themselves</span>. <span class="hps">But they</span> <span class="hps">also recognize that</span> <span class="hps">their</span> <span class="hps">collectivist</span> <span class="hps">family traditions</span> <span class="hps">changed in an</span> <span class="hps">individualistic</span> <span class="hps">direction and</span> <span class="hps">adapted to</span> <span class="hps">the values of</span> <span class="hps">the Norwegian majority</span> <span class="hps">culture.</span> <span class="hps">They</span> <span class="hps">stated that</span> <span class="hps">the Norwegian welfare state</span> <span class="hps">gives them</span> <span class="hps">a high degree</span> <span class="hps">of confidence,</span> <span class="hps">and they have</span> <span class="hps">an overriding</span> <span class="hps">desire to be</span> <span class="hps">integrated.</span> <span class="hps">It also means that</span> <span class="hps">the cultural</span> <span class="hps">competence of</span> <span class="hps">health workers in</span> <span class="hps">the public health service</span> <span class="hps">must be increased.</span> <span class="hps">There is no</span> <span class="hps">simple</span> <span class="hps">answer to</span> <span class="hps">the challenges we</span> <span class="hps">are faced</span> <span class="hps">with an increasing</span> <span class="hps">number of elderly people</span> <span class="hps">from ethnic minorities</span>, <span class="hps">but the Norwegian</span> <span class="hps">health policy makers</span> <span class="hps">can build on</span> <span class="hps">their wishes</span> <span class="hps">and use them</span> <span class="hps">in planning</span> <span class="hps">future</span> <span class="hps">care of the elderly</span>, <span class="hps">which measures</span> <span class="hps">the borderline</span> <span class="hps">between family</span> <span class="hps">care and public</span> <span class="hps">care may be</span> <span class="hps">applicable.</span></span></em></span></span></p><p class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0cm 0cm 0pt;"><span class="hps"><em style="mso-bidi-font-style: normal;"><span style="mso-ansi-language: EN-US;" lang="EN-US"><span style="font-family: Times New Roman; font-size: small;">&nbsp;</span></span></em></span></p>

Det gis ingen enkle svar på de utfordringene vi blir stilt overfor med et økende antall eldre med etnisk minoritetsbakgrunn, men norske helsepolitikere kan bygge videre på deres ønsker og bruke dem i planleggingen av fremtidens eldreomsorg, hvor tiltak i grenselandet mellom familieomsorg og offentlig omsorg kan være aktuelt
Summary
Kleinman (1980 s. 50) har utviklet en modell for krysskulturell sammenligning av ulike helseomsorgssystemer: Familesektor profesjo nell sektor folkelig sektor. Den folkelige sektoren består av ikke-profesjonelle behandlere med nær tilknytning til lokal kultur og virkelighetsoppfatning. Problemstillingen for denne studien er: Hvilke ønsker har eldre med etnisk minoritetsbakgrunn for en alderdom i Norge? Formålet med det kvalitative forskningsintervjuet er å få et empirisk materiale som består av den intervjuedes egen fremstilling av seg selv. Når forskerne i tillegg er etnisk norske, slik som i denne studien, er det en fare for at dette vil påvirke hva informantene vil snakke om i et intervju. Informantene kan ønske å fremstå som takknemlige og høflige i møte med etnisk norske og derfor ikke formidle alle sine ønsker og meninger. Det var ikke vår hensikt å knytte svarene til en bestemt nasjonalitet eller etnisk gruppe, men det var viktig at informantene representerte land som har et større antall innvandrere i Norge.
