Abstract

In this paper (HVDC) high-voltage direct-current grid protection approach to avoid over current & repress dc fault currents in the modular multilevel converters (MMCs) arms is proposed. This is based on the coordination of dc circuit breakers (DCCBs) & half-bridge MMCs. This can be done by temporarily bypassing MMC sub modules by opening of DCCB. The MMCs will be at normal operation once the fault is detected by the DCCBs. The proposed method can be performed by comparing when action is not taken & when MMC is blocked. To observe the effectiveness, of the proposed scheme is performed in MATLAB using a HVDC system. Results show that the coordination of DCCBs & MMC can reduce the absorbed current energy more than 85 % & dc fault current by 75 %, though MMC arm currents is kept small.
