Abstract

This paper presents the design aspects of Line Commutated Converter based High Voltage Direct Current (LCC-HVDC) system. LCC-HVDC is a very efficient and reliable technology for transferring bulk power over long distances with lower losses and higher controllability. But because of lack of international design standards & processes available and higher dependability on adjacent AC network it is difficult to benchmark the design and rating of HVDC equipment in converter stations based on voltage and power requirement. So, this paper presents the key aspects to be considered during designing of LCC-HVDC converter station's equipment. The main equipment in HVDC station includes converter transformer, thyristor valves, AC and DC harmonic filters, smoothing reactor, measurement transducers etc. The design of a HVDC scheme is a complex optimization exercise under numerous constraints like losses, space, reliability, availability etc. in addition to any commercial implications. In this paper, various design considerations and practical aspects for solving this optimization problem is discussed in detail. This paper provides in-depth understanding about the design consideration of LCC-HVDC converter station.
