Abstract

In 18 patients presenting with abnormal movements, CSF indolamine metabolites, namely homovanillic acid (HVA) and 5-hydroxy-indolacetic acid (5HIAA) were measured. Statistical analyses were performed on these results, and a trial with 5-hydroxytryptamine (5HTP), the serotonin precursor, was carried out. 5HTP appears to be beneficial in “the syndrome of intention and action myoclonus as a sequel to hypoxic encephalopathy” but may worsen certain other involuntary movements.
