Abstract

The first two editions of Clinical Pediatric Dermatology were labors of love by a single author, Dr Sidney Hurwitz. Dr Hurwitz was one of the pioneers of pediatric dermatology and produced these two classic textbooks that were thorough yet easy to sit down and read. Most dermatologists and pediatricians are quite familiar with the “black and silver” book published in 1981 and then the “black and gold” hardback of 1993. They continue to be found in pediatric, family medicine, and dermatology clinics throughout the world. Many of us were disappointed as the 1993 edition gradually became outdated.Drs Paller and Mancini have honored Dr Hurwitz with this third edition. They achieved their goal of maintaining the “look and flavor” of the first two editions—now black, silver, and gold with a gray spine. There is the consistency of writing that is not achievable with multiple authors in larger textbooks. The text is comprehensive yet practical and readable. It has been completely updated and includes new chapters and references. Key articles are highlighted in the bibliography at the end of each chapter. The illustrations are fabulous.Drs Paller and Mancini could not have done a better job with this textbook. It is absolutely worth more than the listed price. I am currently recommending it to colleagues interested in pediatric skin disease at all levels of training because the authors have so beautifully represented the field of pediatric dermatology with this outstanding text.
