Abstract

The paper reviews a number of the physical features of tropical cyclones, including the important reaction of the sea induced by the hurricane itself. Indeed, the sea-atmosphere interface is a critical aspect in attempting to predict a hurricane’s behaviour and one to which researchers in engineering fluid mechanucs may be able to make a significant contribution. The known sensitivity of the atmosphere to increasing temperature differences implies that over the coming decades, with global warming, there will be corresponding effects on the intensity, size, and the geographical distribution of hurricanes. Finally, some of the outline strategies suggested for reducing such occurrences are exmined.
