Abstract

Abstract In 2005 Hurricanes Katrina and Rita cased over ten major (> 100,000 gallons) oil spills and medium (> 10,000 gallons) oil spills in coastal areas of Texas and Louisiana. The volume for these spills was approximately eight (8) million gallons, which is just over half the volume of the Exxon Valdez event (1989). After these natural disasters caused such an environmental impact, the Federal Region 6- Regional Response Team (RRT) Executive Committee charged the Science and Technology Chair to form a committee to investigate these situations and make recommendations. The committee included representatives from several federal and state agencies, including: US Environmental Protection Agency (USEPA), US Coast Guard (USCG), US Department of Energy (USDOE), National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) and Texas General Land Office (GLO).
