Abstract
This article discusses how humor has been defined and studied as a meaningful aspect of human development. It reviews theory and research related to children's humor development, the connections between humor development and cognitive, language, social–emotional, and physical-motor development, and it gives suggestions for ways children's humor development can be encouraged by educators and parents. It provides insights into how a sense of humor can be a coping mechanism that is useful throughout life.
