Abstract

Analysing humic substances by means of elemental analysis. i.r. spectroscopy, CP-MAS- 13C-NMR spectroscopy and pyrolytic GC-MS experiments it becomes evident that anthropogenous humic substances from the running off of biological wastewater treatment plants are very similar to autochthonous aquatic humic materials isolated from river waters, but quite different from terragenous humic materials. These similarities are caused by the strong influence of carbohydrates and proteins as precursors of anthropogenous and autochthonous humic substances.
