Abstract
The chapter highlights the particularities of the ‘wicked’ and unpredictable problems that humanitarian engineers are called to manage. Engineers are called to reject solutions with minimal social content or solely technical content. The chapter provides guiding principles when considering a framework for the appraisal, design, planning, execution and sustainability of humanitarian engineering projects. It reviews the steps and issues involved in the execution and management of humanitarian projects towards the selection and recommendation of a transformative suite of approaches to humanitarian challenges such as clean water and sanitation, shelter provision, affordable and clean energy, sustainable cities and communities or the bigger issues of poverty and inequality, urbanisation land management and issues of social context. Case studies, lessons to be learnt and successes from over 20 years of projects delivered from Engineers for Overseas Development are given, providing an overview of humanitarian engineering practices.
