Abstract

In 2000, the American Society for Reproductive Medicine Ethics Committee developed a statement on human reproductive cloning (1). Focusing on the technique that led to the birth of Dolly the lamb, the committee observed that reproductive somatic cell nuclear transfer (SCNT) would not meet standards of ethical acceptability for human use as long as the procedure’s safety is uncertain, ethical issues are insufficiently explored, and couples have alternative methods for having children. Other groups and commissions, including the National Bioethics Advisory Commission (NBAC), have reached similar positions (2).
